New Book About MCC Alumnus to Premiere at MCC!

Acclaimed local children’s author Linda Sue Park is coming to MCC!  And her newest title, A Long Walk to Water, shares a very special connection with the College.  Originally released as a breakfast serial that ran in newspapers nationwide, A Long Walk tells the story of MCC alumnus Salva Dut.  Dut was one of an estimated 27,000 Sudanese Lost Boys who fought off disease, wild animal attacks, starvation, and thirst after a civil war left them displaced.  Having been permitted to immigrate to the United States, Dut settled in Rochester and completed a degree here at MCC.  He went on to found Water for Sudan, which drills cleaning drinking wells in Southern Sudan (one of which was named in MCC’s honor!), and he was inducted into our Alumni Hall of Fame in 2008.  MCC’s Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project has crafted an extraordinary, ongoing relationship with Dut and Water for Sudan, and to date, the Project’s students have raised over $40,000 to benefit those in need of clean drinking water in Southern Sudan.  Because of its unique relationship with Dut and its unique proximity to Linda Sue Park, MCC is honored to be the official launch venue for the release of this book.

Park is an accomplished and tremendously popular children’s author, having published novels including The Kite Fighters, When My Name Was Keoko, and the 2002 Newbery Award-winning A Single Shard.  Her books have been noted for their exceptional focus on Korean heritage and other aspects of historical fiction.  Additionally, Park has published poetry and several picture books, as well as the latest installment of the popular 39 Clues series.  She is remarkably skilled when speaking about the writing process, particularly in conjunction with the unique challenge of writing Dut’s contemporary story, and she is sought after in elementary, secondary, and college classrooms.  Please join us for this singular opportunity!
