New Faculty Interest Group for Open Educational Resources Forming During Open Education Week

In response to requests from MCC faculty members and in recognition of this year’s Open Education Week (March 7-11), a new MCC faculty interest group (FIG) for open educational resources (OER) will be launched on March 7.

Looking for ways to reinvigorate your instruction, tailor your assigned reading, increase your students’ engagement, and contribute to student retention? OER might be the answer. OER are teaching and learning materials such as textbooks, course materials, assignments, presentations, videos, software, etc. that are licensed for free use, revision, and sharing or are in the public domain. Educators can adopt them as is; adapt, revise, and remix them as needed; or create their own from scratch. They are then provided to students at relatively low or no cost.

The first meeting of the OER FIG will be held in the Brighton TCC (12-201) on March 7, from 12:00 to 12:50 p.m. All faculty are welcome. The meeting will feature an informal panel of several faculty members who have successfully adopted open textbooks for their courses. Future meetings will include tips on finding and using OER, updates on OER-related topics, group discussions about members’ OER projects, and more.

RSVPs would be appreciated. Please contact Andrea Kingston, Digital Scholarship Librarian, via e-mail <mailto:akingston4@monroecc.edu> ) or by phone (ext. 2313). More information about Open Education Week is available at <https://www.openeducationweek.org/> .
