White House Summit on Community Colleges

On Tuesday, October 5, 2010, Dr. Jill Biden – a community college professor and wife of Vice President Joe Biden -- will host the first ever White House Summit on Community Colleges. The summit is an opportunity for community colleges, faculty, businesses, policymakers, and students to discuss the importance of community colleges in training the nation’s evolving workforce, and their role in achieving President Obama’s goal that by 2020 America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.

While in-person participation in the summit is limited by space and invitations, you can take part. There are three opportunities:

1. Submit your ideas and comments online at <<https://communitycollege.ideascale.com/>>. Comments can be made in one of six categories that will be discussed at the summit or you can vote on the ideas submitted by others. The categories are:

Industry Partnerships
Pathway to a Baccalaureate
Increasing Graduation rates
Affordability/financial aid
Innovation: Community College of the Future
Supporting Military Veterans and their Families

2. We are accepting the White Ho
use's invitation to upload a 2-3 minute video to answer the question "How has a community college affected your life?" Students are invited to share their thoughts today, Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2:45-3:45 pm at Javas; Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2:00-3:30 pm by the Brighton Room of the Flynn Campus Center; and Friday, Sept. 24, 2:00-3:30 pm, in the Atrium of the Flynn Campus Center.

3. We anticipate that part of the summit will be broadcast and that we will provide an opportunity for the college community to come together around that broadcast. Watch the MCC Daily Tribune for more details as they become available.
