Volunteers Needed for Adopt-A-Highway Project

Monroe Community College employee Kelley Bennett participated in the 2005 National Institute for Leadership and Development (NILD) Leaders Program. During this program participants complete a year long project and are mentored by a colleague. Valarie Avalone, Director of Planning, served as Kelley’s mentor.  The project idea developed by Bennett was to implement a college-wide service day. Recent trends have shown that giving back to the community in which one lives and works fosters civic responsibility through direct, meaningful and necessary service.

The MCC Service Day will provide an opportunity for staff, faculty and administrators to participate in direct service, filling an unmet need of the community. The project chosen is the Adopt-A-Highway Program. MCC has adopted a two-mile section of East Henrietta Road from Monroe Community Hospital to Jefferson Road (in front of the College). The Adopt-A-Highway Program is committed to keeping stretches of roads and highways litter free. Participation in the program fosters a sense of community ownership of the roadway as a sense of pride in its appearance and supports the Monroe Community College mission statement as it directly involves community partnership building.

The MCC Adopt-A-Highway Service Day will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2005 from 9:30am-12:30pm. A tailgate lunch will follow. Anyone interested in participating in this event should contact Kelley Bennett, x2437 or mailto:kbennett@monroecc.edu
