How Faculty Can Manage Difficult Conversations with Students
Wednesday, October 22 at 1:00-2:30 p.m. (Eastern)

Webinar Overview
In today's world of blurred lines of communication, students often approach faculty with difficult conversations that go beyond the content area of study. This is a challenging situation for both faculty and student. Conversations can fall into a wide range of topics and they often cause stress and unforeseen challenges for faculty struggling with balance and finding the appropriate response. A student may be having a mental health crisis, panic around grades, angry outbursts, or social problems that extend beyond the classroom door.

In this webinar, we will discuss several difficult conversations with students, including:

·                  Complaints about grades or unfair treatment within the classroom

·                  Requests for life advice, career choices, and academic goals

·                  Struggles with thoughts of hopelessness or suicide

·                  Problems with focus and keeping up with the volume of work at college

·                  Frustrations with being held accountable for their behavior in the classroom

Join Dr. Brian Van Brunt as he reviews how to approach these conversations with tact and grace. He will offer insights on how and when to set limits with students, key dos and don'ts, and how to leave the student in a better place than where they started.

Webinar Objectives

·                  Learn ways to stay calm, cool, and collected when responding to a crisis event

·                  Discuss referring at-risk students to additional services

·                  Realize the importance of attending to meta-communication and answering "the question behind the question"

·                  Learn how to get ahead of problem conversations through early communication and setting expectations

·                  Discover ways to set limits and avoid getting in "over your head"
