Monday's College Closing

A number of you have conveyed to me the difficulties caused by Monday’s late closure announcement. I will not disagree that it could have been made and communicated earlier.

Our goal is to make a call as early as possible.  We actually convened via email at 4:30 that morning and decided to go ahead with classes on Monday, given none of the school districts had announced closures at that time, and, based on information coming into the Public Safety Department, no closures of roads, bus service or local government had been announced or was predicted.

The school districts then made their calls to close schools relatively late (for example, Brighton Central School District sent an email at 5:58 am), but at that time most weather reports coming into Public Safety suggested clearing in the afternoon, which indicated to us that closure might be premature. Our concern level changed when weather reports advised that the storm would strengthen through the afternoon, so we made our call to close at about 6:30 am. Communication to local news media, the MCC web site and our social media channels began immediately but we recognize that the message did not reach students and employees soon enough.

As with all we do, we will learn from Monday and work with our partners to improve our timing.

I am sorry for the challenges that our late notice created for you and your students. We will work to do better.
