Rochester Filmmaker Offers Advice on College, Career Success

Nicholle La Vann, a 2000 MCC graduate and an award-winning Rochester filmmaker, spent Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 10) at DCC sharing stories with the college community about her journey from MCC student to filmmaker and discussing her film-in-progress, “Solutionz.”

She spoke to a full house for an hour at noon and screened her film-in-progress at 3 p.m. Nicholle also spoke with students in Assistant Professor Christine Plumeri’s Sociology 101 class.

The documentary short focuses on children whose parents have been incarcerated and how this period has affected their lives. The piece includes interviews with Rochester and New York City children, the children’s parents, and state Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson and Sen. Velmanette Montgomery to underscore the importance of understanding what these children experienced and establishing appropriate services to assist them. Nicholle plans to enter her documentary in the Tribeca Film Festival.

Wednesday events were sponsored by DCC Visiting Scholars Committee and the Student Events and Governance Association.
