Klein Explains Connection Between Holocaust, Human Rights Studies

Dr. Dennis Klein, director of the Jewish studies program at Kean University,
located in Union, N.J., shared his perspective on the expanding field of
Holocaust studies at a lecture and reception hosted by the Holocaust Genocide
Studies Project (HGSP) on Tuesday evening, Sept. 25.

The event was co-sponsored by the LeRoy V. Good Library.

During his opening comments, Klein stated he was "impressed with MCC's
commitment to the project." He also confirmed that the HGSP's efforts are
unique in that they appropriately include human rights perspectives and reach
far into the local community.

"Human rights should be part of our topic," Klein commented. "There are
definite historical connections to the Holocaust. The guarantee of human rights
was an essential outcome of World War II."

Responding to questions from the audience, Klein also referenced key Holocaust
studies concepts and applied them to contemporary issues such as cultural
developments in Europe and the Middle East.

"This subject is attractive and remains in the news because everyone wants to
know everyone's secrets," said Klein. "Students are interested and we owe it to
them to do our jobs well as educators."
