Students are seeing results in the Service-Learning projects now under way through courses on the Damon City Campus, says Coordinator Susan Bender.
Service-Learning, which started as a comprehensive effort at the beginning of this semester, allows students to learn and develop through organized civic engagement. It is connected to curriculum, emphasizes student enrichment, and fills a community need that is defined by the participating organization.
About a dozen projects range from helping elders to teaching children. Projects include:
*Several Law and Criminal Justice students are presenting workshops to senior programs on identity theft, working in conjunction with the Gates Police Department.
*Students in Children’s Literature have teamed with eight-year-olds at Wilson Commencement Park who are reading below grade level to create a book buddy program, in which college students and youngsters pair up and read the same book then e-mail each other about it and meet individually and in groups to discuss it.
*Paralegal students are staffing monthly legal clinics for the Volunteer Legal Services Project of Monroe County, working with lawyers to provide assistance on divorce cases.
*The Early Childhood Physical Education class is developing and implementing lesson plans for the Brighton Recreation Center after-school program. The lessons are being compiled in a binder to keep for future use.
