WROC-TV, RBJ Report on Growth of MCC's Dual-Enrollment Optics Program

Latest data show the number of local secondary students enrolled in credit-bearing optics courses this academic year has nearly quadrupled -- 202 students from five Monroe County high schools -- compared with an enrollment of 56 students from two high schools in 2012-13.

The growing number of high school students in MCC's dual-enrollment optics program is attributed in part to a coordinated campaign with employers, industry groups, government and K-12 schools aimed at heightening public awareness of educational and career opportunities in the optics and photonics fields.

News8 (WROC-TV) and the Rochester Business Journal covered this news, interviewing Dr. Alexis Vogt, chair of MCC's optical systems technology program who worked closely with schools in increasing opportunities for more high school students to get a jump start in college. The reporters also interviewed West Irondequoit High School students, teacher Alex Virga and Principal Doug Lauf. West Irondequoit is one of five schools offering dual-enrollment optics courses this academic year.

The Rochester Business Journal is scheduled to publish its report in the Friday, May 11, issue.
