MCC Hosts Greentopia Futures Summit

On Wednesday, October 21, 2015, a dynamic group of over 300 sustainability leaders and students from across the United States and Canada gathered at MCC’s Brighton Campus for Greentopia’s third Futures Summit: Cities of the Future – designing 21st-century cities with green districts. Dr. Kress welcomed attendees and noted how proud MCC is to have partnered in presenting this year’s Summit.

The day included a number of panel sessions and discussions, an exhibitor expo and networking event, and featured three nationally recognized keynote speakers:

*         Jason Roberts, Build a Better Block: How to rapidly revitalize a neighborhood through action-based community engagement;

*         Taras Grescoe, activist and author of Straphanger: Saving Our Cities and Ourselves from the Automobile addressing public transportation around the world; and

*         Dr. Antwi Akom, People powered place-making: race, poverty and the promise of re-imagining urban development.

Special thanks goes out to Valarie Avalone, who spent countless hours as a member of the Greentopia’ EcoDistrict Critical Team and  served as MCC’s point person on the planning committee for this event; Chris Biehler and Mitch Redlo, who acted as session moderators; and Mark Ernsthausen, who gave the introduction for one of the keynote speakers.  Additional thanks to all those that helped to make the event a success – representatives from Campus Events, Instructional Technologies, Building Services, Public Safety, and the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development.
