MCC Honor Society Raises Money and Hope During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October was a big month in the battle against breast cancer as students in Monroe Community College's Alpha Theta Iota chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society collected $18,500 for cancer research and dozens of hats for children undergoing chemotherapy.

Chapter members raised $15,000 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by selling pink carnations at area malls and donating the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester. Over 50 members, with their families and friends, also participated in the 3.5-mile Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 20, raising $3,500.

Alpha Theta Iota has collected 85 hats, scarves and bandannas for the national Hats Off for Cancer Project, which collects hats for children undergoing chemotherapy. The chapter's goal is to collect 600 hats.

"The support from our chapter members and college community is making a difference in our fight against breast cancer locally and globally," said Ann Schwartz, vice president of service projects for the chapter. Phi Theta Kappa is the honor society for two-year colleges.

New hats, scarves or bandannas can be dropped off in collection bins in the Student Center office at MCC's Brighton Campus, Rm. 3-134, 1000 E. Henrietta Rd.
