CSTEP Student wins 1st place in Mapping Competition

Ricardo Lagares, a MCC CSTEP student, won first place in the GIS/SIG Mapping Competition held during the 16th Annual Spatial/Digital Mapping Conference entitled "Technologies and Trends Impacting the Spatial Industry.”  This conference was held at the RIT Inn and Conference Center on April 24, 2007.

Ricardo's poster was selected the winner based on the quality of the maps and the use of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS).  Contestants included interns from area colleges and universities.

CSTEP is a NYS Education Department grant-funded program.  It seeks to increase the number of underrepresented individuals in the fields of science, technology, mathematics, the health and licensed professions.  A new initiative, the CSTEP GIS internship allows CSTEP students to work at Rochester City Hall in the Bureau of Planning as an assistant to GIS Technicians to develop GIS maps for city events and community organizing.
