Stand Against Racism 2013

Monroe Community College, in conjunction with the YWCA, presents Stand Against Racism 2013.

RACE CARD PROJECT: The Stand Against Racism 2013 committee (Rory Butler, Natasha Christensen, Marcia Fugate, Dina Giovanelli and Tokeya C. Graham) is showcasing our College community’s take on The Race Card Project. The project was developed by Michele Norris and instructs participants to craft a six word sentence responding to their ideas about race (Norris). Six words. No more. No less. Please go beyond your first knee-jerk response. Aim for something that examines race more closely. Consider your concerns, triumphs, fears, experiences with race; explore how race has informed your life, your choices, your politics, your practices, your career, your family, your identity, etc. We aim for this to be a meaningful activity, so be thoughtful and insightful in your responses. For more information about Norris’ project, visit:
https://theracecardproject.com/

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO: Please email your six word sentence responding to the topic of race to Natasha at nchristensen@monroecc.edu (we won’t use names), send them to her via interoffice mail or put them in an envelope under her office door. We will begin posting the responses at Brighton Campus and Damon City Campus on April 22. The responses will be displayed until Friday, May 3.

WHAT’S NEXT? On Thursday, April 25, 2013, there will be a symbolic stand at Damon City Campus at 11:30 a.m. in the 4th floor Atrium. Please come show your support and STAND Against Racism. We will take photos and sign pledges to combat discriminatory practices in language and action. The entire College community is invited.

On Friday, April 26, 2013 (the national date), join us in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center, Warshof Conference Center (Monroe A 3-205) during College Hour for a dynamic presentation and activity. Immediately following, join us in the Forum for a STAND Against Racism. We will take photos and sign pledges to combat discriminatory practices in language and action. The entire College community is invited. We look forward to your support.

All activities are co-sponsored by MCC’s Diversity Council
