Passing of Professor Emeritus Clement Finch Hapeman

I am sad to let the college community know of the passing of Professor Emeritus Clement Finch Hapeman. Known by his peers to be a committed, relevant, bright, and articulate sociologist, he was also highly regarded for his passionate interest in the critical issues of our time.

That passion began early for Professor Hapeman who earned a B.A. in Sociology and a M.S. in Social Science Methodology from Syracuse University. Befpre beginning his MCC career, he was employed as director of the Project for Disadvantaged, Monroe County Library System and as a sociologist for the Brockport Desegregation Institute for the NYS Education Department.

Professor Hapeman, who taught at MCC from 1970-1988, was instrumental in establishing more effective placement and transfer programs for MCC students. Always committed to learning more about the teaching-learning process, he continued to develop new courses and substantially revise existing ones throughout his career here.

An end of life ceremony will be held December 17th at 2pm at the Eckankar Center of Rochester, 3300 Monroe Avenue, Pittsford, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama 36104, or the ECK center; or, if you are so inclined, find ways in your own life to move toward tolerance and understanding of those that appear to be most unlike you.
