STEP Students Attend the YWCA Empowering Luncheon

Three young ladies in the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) and one young lady from the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) attended the YWCA Empowering Women Luncheon on Wednesday, October 7th.  The guest speaker was Ms. Lucille O’Neal, mother of Shaquille (Shaq) O’Neal.  Ms. O’Neal theme was that it is never too late to dream big dreams and pursue them.  She shared her personal experience with overcoming adversity and poverty through her faith and personal commitment.  Ms. O’Neal was an inspiration to all who attended the luncheon.

To the students, Ms. O’Neal speech hit home.  The students felt a personal connection with Ms. O’Neal and with her story.  They felt encouraged and motivated to continue their own educational and personal journeys.

STEP and CSTEP are funded through a grant from the New York State Education Department with the purpose of increasing the numbers of underrepresented individuals preparing for and entering careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM), licensed and health professions.
