Bloomberg TV Reports on How MCC is Combating the Cost of "Prohibitively Pricey" Textbooks

This week, in Bloomberg TV's report on college text book costs, MCC's efforts to lower that burden for students was featured prominently. The report showcased the work of MCC faculty members Terry Shamblin and Renee Dimino, who spent 30 days this summer creating an Open Education Resource (OER), a more affordable option for students taking a First Year Experience (FYE) course.

Last year, the cost for course materials for one First Year Experience (FYE) course at MCC averaged $140.00 per student. This year the cost is $18-23. The total cost savings for MCC students taking one of two COS courses this fall: $226k.

Early research suggests that student grades and retention improve where an OER has been used as a replacement for traditional publisher-generated content.
