National Nurses Week to Be Celebrated May 6-12 at MCC

The work of America's 2.7 million registered nurses to save lives and to maintain the health of millions of individuals is the focus of this year's National Nurses Week.

"Nurses: Your Voice, Your Health, Your Life" is the theme for 2004.  Annually, National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as RN Recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession.   Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care. From bedside nursing in hospitals and long-term care facilities to the halls of research institutions, state legislatures, and Congress, the depth and breadth of the nursing profession is meeting the expanding health care needs of American society.

During this week, the Department of Nursing has planned many activities for the MCC community.  These public events will be held as follows:

·       View the video, “Campaign for Nursing’s Future“ to be shown on the new plasma screens in the Bausch & Lomb Lobby, and the dining area of the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center on May 10, 11, and 12 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm.

·       View the Building 8 display case which features a poster of this year’s Nurses Week theme, pictures of The Genesee Hospital Graduating Class of 1926 and the Monroe Community College Graduating Class of December 2003.

·       Visit Building 8, 3rd floor and read student nurses career statements, displayed on the wall, from currently enrolled students .

Other activities the MCC Nursing Department has coordinated include:
        .
·       Faculty is distributing Nurses Week cards to each nursing student in the program.

·       Faculty and students are distributing Thank You cards to nurses in all our community affiliating agencies.

·       Faculty has created a display in the Nursing Learning Resource Center called, “Nursing Department – A Walk Down Memory Lane,” and features photos of the Nursing Department faculty and staff when they graduated from nursing school.
