HSMI and Radiological Emergency Preparedness

The MCC Homeland Security Management Institute (HSMI) is under contract with the Monroe County Office of Emergency Management to provide radiological emergency preparedness training to responders from local government agencies and community organizations in the event of an incident at the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant.   The training is designed to provide instruction on radiological concepts, planning and anticipated hazards, radiation exposure control, monitoring and decontamination techniques. Training modules consist of classroom lectures, self-paced instruction and hands-on activities, and are tailored to each responder group. Topics covered correspond to essential emergency worker knowledge required for Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) plans by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

During 2008 to date, HSMI delivered this radiological emergency response training to approximately 500 emergency responders representing 27 different government agencies and local organizations including Monroe Community College that acts as a Reception Congregate Care Center for the community.
