The Brain and Your Classroom

Please join us for a discussion about teaching and learning next week at the Teaching & Creativity Center. Susan Thompson of the Psychology Department will facilitate a conversation on Daniel Willingham’s book Why Don’t Students Like School? A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions about How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom.

The focus of the conversation will be chapters 4 ("Why Is It So Hard for Students to Understand Abstract Ideas?") and 5 ("Is Drilling Worth It?").

The event will take place at noon next Wednesday, Feb. 16, and 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17. Both 50-minute conversations will be held at the TCC, room 315 of the LeRoy V. Good Library on the Brighton campus.

The TCC’s second event of the semester will be facilitated by Roberta Davies of the Psychology Department. The event will explore chapters 6 (“What’s the Secret to Getting Students to Think Like Real Scientists, Mathematicians, and Historians?") and 7 ("How Should I Adjust My Teaching Style for Different Learners?") of Willingham's book.

Those conversations will take place at noon on Wednesday, April 6, and at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 7 at the TCC.
