Women in Technology of Digital Rochester Supports MCC’s Female Technical Ed Students

Female students at MCC who are preparing for careers in computer science, information technology and digital media will be able to focus more on their goals because of the new Women in Technology of Digital Rochester Scholarship. Supporters of Women in Technology, formerly known as the Association for Women in Computing-Upstate New York (AWC-UNY), gave $10,000 to the Monroe Community College Foundation to establish the scholarship for female IT students.

“Information technology is a fast-moving field; every five years there are new opportunities to consider,” said Barbara Kassnoff, vice president of finance for AWC-UNY. “We want young women to know that this is a rewarding career field, one that offers a wide range of job opportunities and earning potential.”

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time during the spring 2011 semester. Students must attend MCC full or part time, have completed at least 12 credits at MCC and have achieved a minimum 3.0 grade point average. This year’s scholarship winner will be recognized at the organization’s annual Technology Woman of the Year Award Breakfast, featuring keynote speaker MCC President Anne M. Kress, Ph.D., on April 28, 2011.

“Because MCC is reasonably priced, accessible and flexible in terms of having classes offered during the day, evening, and online, we thought our money would go farther and help more students at MCC,” said Kassnoff.

Women in Technology of Digital Rochester is a non-profit professional organization for women and men who have an interest in information and technology. The organization is dedicated to the advancement of women in the technology fields. For additional information, refer to www.digitalrochester.com.
