Diversity and Inclusion Is Not Simply Defined by Race and Ethnicity

Workforce diversity is essential to any company’s (institutions) success, but inclusion takes into account the perspectives that ALL employees bring to the workplace. With nearly 98% of employers having or implementing “Diversity and Inclusion” initiatives over the last decade, it is apparent that diversity and inclusion are important for businesses and critical in developing their talent pipeline. Including veterans as a part of the talent pipeline must be an integral measure of championing diversity of ideas and thoughts.  And, at Monroe Community College, we are uniquely poised to help bridge that gap for employers.

In collaboration with Monroe Community College, the Upstate New York College Collaborative (UNYCC) is proud to co-sponsor a four-part training for faculty, staff, and administrators focused on:

SUPPORTING TRANSITIONING AND RETURNING SERVICE MEMBERS

The STARS project developed by Dr. Holly Wheeler, Professor of English/Philosophy at MCC and co-facilitated by Eric Wheeler, Assistant Director, Veteran Services, responds to the need for understanding and supporting the success of student veterans. This project has three main objectives:

  1. To educate the college community about the needs, concerns, and challenges of veteran students.
  2. To develop a network of faculty, staff, and administrators willing to provide assistance, support, and a safe place for veterans.
  3. To provide visible support across campuses for veteran students.

To register for this four session (two part) series, please click the following link.  It is incumbent on us all to better understand the lived experience of the diversity of students that we serve at MCC.  I hope you will take time to educate yourself about this particular population of students.
