Mary Nolan Remembered through MCC Foundation Scholarship

On Tuesday evening, July 26, surrounded by sunflowers on the Rooftop at The Market at I-Square, Rachel Nolan announced to family and friends, including a group of MCC employees, that they had raised $25,116 to endow a scholarship in her mother’s memory at the MCC Foundation. Guests were surprised to learn they had surpassed their fundraising goal in under two years. Thanks to our supporters, The Mary P. Nolan Performing Arts Endowed Scholarship will benefit MCC students in perpetuity. As you may remember, Mary was a beloved MCC employee who passed away in a July 2014 motorcycle accident.

Mary’s daughter Rachel said, “I can’t explain how much meeting our endowment goal means to my family. It is beyond amazing; the 5Ks and other events raised an incredible amount of money. Her legacy will live on forever.”

Since 2014, teams led by MCC coworkers participated in Homecoming 5Ks to raise money for the Nolan scholarship, donning pink tutus the first year in recognition of the ballet classes Mary taught in the community and through MCC’s intramural program. Nearly 80 people donated to the fund, including her daughters, Rachel and Sarah.

Rachel also noted how her mother “truly loved where she worked” and how she taught dance and choreography for over 20 years.

In his remarks, Vice President of Student Services Lloyd Holmes, Ph.D. noted how Mary was one of the first employees to greet him when he joined MCC in 2014. “Mary brought her love for life, organizational skills, and dance to MCC. She taught us to find the songs in our hearts,” he said.

Mary joined MCC in 2005 as a cashier in the Student Accounts office.

Thank you to all who supported this fund and others through gifts to the MCC Foundation. Because of you, Mary continues to dance.
