Save the Date Essential Discussions: Challenges Facing a Diverse Veteran Population

Please join us for our next Essential Discussion Forum, CHALLENGES FACING A DIVERSE VETERAN POPULATION

When servicemen and servicewomen leave the military and enter higher education, they exit one institution, with its set of values, norms, and expectations -- "the military" and enter into a new one -- "the university." These men and women do a “role exit” meaning going out of one role into another role.

These servicemen and women replace their physical training and uniforms with jeans and sweatshirts adorned with the college’s logo. They replace their oath to “serve and protect” with the student code of conduct that will govern their academic journey. In other words, they say goodbye to the world they know -- including their comrades, and begin the process of understanding the culture of higher education. In this transition, their identity shifts (in most cases) from warrior to student.

Veteran students face an array of diverse issues:

  • Confidence
  • PTSD
  • Family issues
  • Being accepted
  • Fitting in….and more

Please mark your calendars and join us on April 14th, at noon with special guests: Dr. Peter Ziamowski, from the Rochester Veteran Center, Jenny Lopez from the VA’s Vital Program, Dr. Holly Wheeler, English/Philosophy Department, and Adrian Hale, Senior Manager of Workforce / Economic Development & Education Initiatives at the Rochester Chamber of Commerce, Veteran and MCC Alumnus. The event will be moderated by Mr. Eric Wheeler, Director of Veteran Services, MCC.
