MCC Featured in RBJ


MCC was prominently featured in the past two issues of the Rochester Business Journal, bringing attention to the College’s achievements and community collaborations.

April 7 – “Focus on Photonics” special section

The article “Schools ride photonics growth” looks at what MCC and other area higher ed institutions are doing in response to local employers’ workforce demands in optics and photonics since the announcement of the national American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics.

Alexis Vogt, endowed chair and associate professor of MCC’s optical systems technology program, was interviewed about the MCC program’s increased student enrollment within the past two years and ongoing efforts with primary and high schools in getting youths thinking about careers in optics and photonics.

April 14 – “A Greener Downtown ” special report

The article “Environmental smarts pervade MCC’s downtown site” spotlights the Downtown Campus, which has incorporated major green features inside and outside the building. Of these features, the wall of windows facing State Street and the green roofing received more extensive coverage. MCC is seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

Dr. Joel Frater, executive dean of the Downtown Campus, is quoted in the article. The reporter also interviewed both Monroe County’s Environmental Services director and engineer, who has worked closely with MCC on the campus construction project; DiMarco Constructors vice president of development and construction; and LaBella Associates architects. 


April 14 – “MCC theater gets $3.85M upgrade”

In addition to detailing the scope of the renovation project, the front page article points out that the recent acoustical improvements to this community resource now make it possible to better accommodate a wide range of activities including lectures, concerts and plays. 

In the article, Robit Agrawal, architectural services director at Popli Design Group, the lead architecture firm for the project, explains that he and his team "were tasked with retrofitting a new design to an old space with sound at the center of their work." President Kress is quoted as saying, “The theater helps make students see the value in MCC.”
