The Passing of Tom Gilbert, Chair of Information and Computer Technologies

On Sunday, MCC lost a dear friend and colleague. Tom Gilbert, chair and associate professor of the Information and Computer Technologies Department, was loved by students and colleagues during his 15 years as an MCC faculty member as well as by the Finger Lakes community through his many years of community service.

Tom was brilliant in sharing his knowledge with students, educating professionals in the field, and inspiring others to give back to the community. As one colleague put it, “Tom was one of the most student-centered faculty I know. He was kind, understanding, and the students knew how much he cared as there were students in his office all of the time.”

During his tenure at MCC, Tom was passionate about his department and the college’s computer-related offerings. He readily immersed himself in new experiences – from teaching online and expanding dual-enrollment opportunities to being a much sought-after academic advisor in the department. In the classroom and lab, his interest was in creating a vibrant, nurturing environment and encouraging collaborative learning to solve problems.

Tom’s teaching career at MCC began in 1996 as an adjunct assistant professor in Computer-Related Curricula. He quickly rose through the ranks to become associate professor in 2004 following five years as assistant professor and two years as instructor in the Department of Office and Computer Programs.

His service to the college included chairing SCAA; co-chairing the Office of Computer and Programs Curriculum Committee and the Promotions and Tenure Committee; and serving as a member of the OCP Strategic Planning Committee.

Tom was also dedicated to service. He was a veteran of the Army and Air Force and served for more than 16 years as a medic and a licensed EMT instructor for the Finger Lakes Regional Emergency Medical Service Council. He retired from his work with the council about two years ago to focus on personal matters, including his wife’s health. Regrettably, she passed away in 2010.

His accolades over the years are numerous, including a meritorious service medal from the U.S. Air Force, a meritorious service award from the American Heart Association, and a national exemplary service award from Leadership VA Alumni.

He held a master’s degree in chemistry and a bachelor’s in biology, both from Alfred University.

Prior to coming to MCC, Tom worked in various capacities for the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Canandaigua and the USAF Medical Center in Illinois.

Tom is survived by his second wife, Terry, and daughter, Kristin Gilbert.

Memorial gifts may be made in his memory through the MCC Foundation. Calling hours will be 2:00 to 6:00 pm Friday, December 21, at Johnson Kennedy Funeral Home, 47 North Main Street, Canandaigua, NY 14424. A private funeral is planned.
