Innovative HVAC Program Includes Direct Partnership with Local Businesses to Meet Workforce Needs

The EDIWS division has added a new option for students seeking a fast track program to enter the job market as an entry-level HVAC technician. The new HVAC Jump Start program is designed to provide participants with basic skills in refrigeration, heating and electrical systems. This 10-week accelerated program stacks into MCC's HVAC certificate and degree program, and consists of 13 credit hours of education while embedding a mandatory requirement that participants complete 20 hours of relevant work per week in a co-op with a local employer. As part of the program, EDIWS Education to Employment services has partnered with local employers to ensure all participants obtain employment prior to the start of the program.

The first cohort began in January 2020 with a total of 18 students; 14 new to the field, and 4 incumbent workers. Employer partners include: Once Again Nut Butters, City of Rochester, Halco Energy, Crosby-Brownlie, Postler & Jaeckle, JT Mauro, University of Rochester, Isaac Heating and Cooling, and John Betlem. Through this program, employers will be able to source a qualified worker that is committed to learning HVAC technician skills. Follow up efforts are underway to run a second cohort this summer.

If you have any questions about this program, please contact Dale Pearce x6118 or John Troy x6172 within the EDIWS division.
