New 1-390 Ramp Interchange to Open this Week

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced this week that new exit and entrance ramps will open this week on Interstate 390 at Exit 16 in the town of Brighton, Monroe County. An important milestone of the $30.7 million Access 390 project, these ramps will improve safety and ease travel where Route 15A (East Henrietta Road) and Route 15 (West Henrietta Road) meet the interstate. The ramps are expected to open by Thursday, November 3, 2016.

"These traffic and infrastructure improvements are essential to making New York's roadways safer, more reliable and easier for travelers in and around the Rochester area," Governor Cuomo said. "The new ramps will ease travel on and off the interstate by providing direct access to the region’s universities, hospitals and shopping centers, and help boost economic activity in Monroe County and beyond."

Exit 16, which connected northbound traffic on I-390 to East Henrietta road and West Henrietta road, has been transformed into two separate exits and includes three new ramps. To help direct traffic, large overhead signs on I-390 northbound and other regulatory signs have been installed.

New exit ramps include:

* A new Exit 16B to allow access to East Henrietta Road heading north;

* A new Exit 16A to allow access to East Henrietta Road heading south and West Henrietta Road; and

* A new entrance ramp from Route 15A to allow access to I-390 north.

The new interchange provides access to the University of Rochester, the University of Rochester Medical Center and Monroe Community College. Travelers will also have easier access to shopping centers and local restaurants.

State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll said, "The I-390 Exit 16 interchange is one of the busiest in the region and these new ramps will simplify travel for the roughly 28,000 motorists who use it each day. This project truly represents Governor Cuomo's commitment to making smart transportation improvements that not only improve safety and reduce congestion, but also support the local economy by improving access to the businesses and services we rely on every day."

Work began in the summer of 2015 as part of an ongoing project to reconstruct the interchange of Interstate 390 and Route 15A (East Henrietta Road). This is the fourth and final phase in a series of projects to improve access between I-390 and adjacent roads, including Kendrick Road, East River Road, and West Henrietta and East Henrietta Roads, also called Access 390 Interchange 16.

The final phase of this project also includes the rehabilitation of two bridges. In summer of 2016, the Route 15A bridge over I-390 was completed with a new driving surface and other structural improvements, and the Route 15A bridge over the Erie Canal is currently being replaced. This portion of the project will be completed by fall of 2017.
