Dean of Liberal Arts


At the June 11th meeting of the Board of Trustees, Michael John McDonough, Ph.D. was appointed Dean of Liberal Arts. 

Since 1987, he has served as chair of the English Division, Director of Communication Studies and a professor of English and Communication Studies at Alfred University. During that time, he chaired major college-wide initiatives.


Dr. McDonough earned his doctorate in English and American Studies from Pennsylvania State University, his M.A. in English from Oklahoma State University, and his Postgraduate Certificate in Education and B.A. with Honors in Film and Drama from Reading University in England.

Dr. McDonough’s teaching has garnered him numerous awards: Alfred University Student Senate Excellence in Teaching Award (2003, 2004), Teacher of the Year at Alfred (1992), EOP/HEOP Teacher of the Year (1993, 1994), New York State Scholar in the Humanities (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996), and National Participant Faculty/Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (2002).

Dr. McDonough’s references cited his prodigious work ethic and his capacity to see the big picture. He was a founding member of Alfred’s General Education Assessment Team as well as the committee charged with writing a new mission statement for the college. He also was a founding member of the University Research Initiative Committee, where he set the undergraduate research agenda for Alfred, founded/edited/published Alfred’s first undergraduate journal, and wrote three major grants. Chairing the ARGUS committee (Administering Undergrad Research Stipends) and managing the Undergrad Research Forum are correlative activities.

As chair of two divisions, Dr. McDonough was responsible for faculty recruitment, hiring, tenure and promotion procedures, budget management, curricular leadership, professional and staff development, identifying enrollment goals, and planning and executing promotional materials and events.

Dr. McDonough has authored 10 journal and book articles; he has served as a writer, reader and test consultant for Educational Testing Services since 1987; he has served the College Board since 2004 as an assessment consultant; and, he has served as a distance educator and a visiting instructor in the College of Continuing Education at Penn State.

Most recently, Dr. McDonough was appointed to the English Academic Advisory Committee, a seven-member national group which advises the College Board on curricula, assessment and professional development.
