The Inaugural Signature Ceremony of The Democracy Commitment @ MCC

Our goal is that every graduate of an American community college shall have had an education in democracy.”

– The Democracy Commitment Declaration

Please join us Wednesday, May 9, 3 – 4 pm in Room 4151 at the Damon City Campus for the Inaugural Signature Ceremony of the Democracy Commitment (TDC) @ MCC. Brief remarks will be offered by Michael McDonough, provost and vice president, Academic Services, and MCC President Anne Kress. Amee Bearne, national coordinator of TDC, will then give a brief keynote address. This event will also feature a debut of the MCC-produced video, “What Does Democracy Look Like?”

Developed in early 2011by community college leaders, TDC is a national initiative to engage community college students in civic learning and democratic practice. MCC was one of 50 community colleges and districts nationwide that were original signatories.

Goals of TDC@MCC include: a public commitment to the central role of civic education, the expansion of democracy-enhancing curricula, faculty/staff development in civic learning and democratic practice, partnerships with local civic, non-profit and governmental agencies that are primarily engaged in the social and economic development of local communities, and participation in a national clearinghouse of program designs, curricula and project development strategies for community colleges.

The Inaugural Signature Ceremony will be live video-streamed to the Brighton Campus Warshof Conference Center, Flynn Campus Center (Empire Room). Attendees on both campuses will have an opportunity to sign a pledge of support. We look forward to sharing the vision of this exciting campus project.
