Academic Advisement Faculty and Student Contest Winners

Counseling and Advising is pleased to announce the winners of the Academic Advisement Contest:
Professor Elizabeth Laidlaw
Student Maura Spencer

Excerpts from the winners submissions:
Professor Elizabeth Laidlaw
“Being a college professor does not guarantee that one has a minimal capacity to advise students.  I really do know just enough about advisement to be dangerous.”

Professor Laidlaw has spent numerous hours attending Advisement training workshops and shadowing advisement staff in the center, taking action on her feeling of uncertainty.  She is an outstanding advisor.

Student Maura Spencer
“Quietly yet thoughtfully, carrot in hand, Professor Smith said something that really hit home….”You know, Maura…you have what it takes.  You have what it takes to do anything you want with your life.”  She couldn’t possibly know that I would carry that powerful piece of wisdom with me every day.  How could she know that when I lose hope, “you have what it takes”, now echoes through my head, her encouraging voice rings in my ears, and becomes the inspiration that brings me back down to earth and decide to keep going?”

Maura sought out help and found salvation in an advisor who had a positive and optimistic encouraging style.
