Book Discussion Group Invitation

The MCC Libraries and the Diversity Interest Group (of the Diversity Council) are pleased to announce their co-sponsorship of the new Diversity Book Discussion Group. As its name implies, the group will focus on diversity themes and issues. We hope to raise awareness and generate discussion on the different faces of diversity through our choice of books. Please join us as we begin this exciting new project!

We will read one book per semester, meeting in the LeRoy V. Good Library (Brighton) for our discussions. The Diversity Book Discussion Group is open to all staff and students.

For our first book, we have chosen Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda by Lt.-Gen. (ret.) Romeo Dallaire, to correspond with his visit to MCC in November (sponsored by the Holocaust Genocide Studies Project and the Brighton Campus Activities Board). Lt.-Gen. Dallaire was the UN force commander stationed in Rwanda during the Rwandan Genocide, and the book details the horrific unfolding of the events there and his subsequent diagnosis with post-traumatic stress disorder.

We are planning to meet three times over the fall semester, in order to divide the book into manageable segments: October 5 (chapters 1-6), October 19 (chapters 7-11), and November 2 (chapters 12 to end). The meetings will be held during college hour and you are free to bring your lunch.

For planning purposes, we would appreciate it if you would RSVP if you are interested in attending. Please send an email to Lori Annesi, Reference/Special Collections Librarian, <mailto:lannesi@monroecc.edu> by September 23. If you have already sent an RSVP in reply to the previous announcement, there is no need to RSVP again.

For further information, please contact Lori Annesi or Don Beech <mailto:dbeech@monroecc.edu>.
