Surgical Technology and Nursing 112 Collaboration

On Monday, Feb 7th, the first-year Surgical Technology students hosted the the Nursing 112 students and faculty in the lab.  The students worked together to prepare a patient for surgery. Getting warm blankets, patient positioning and safety, putting on monitors, and prepping the surgical site were all done by the nursing students with the surgical tech students in the teaching role.  Knowledge of sterile boundaries and draping the patient were shared. Most important was doing the "Time Out" to make sure they have the right patient, right site and right surgery to be performed before the incision is made on the patient.

This wonderful collaboration was started four years ago and occurs each semester.  It is a great opportunity for the nursing students to see the OR "in action" without being at the hospital.  It is also helpful for the surfigical technology students who volunteered to take on the instructors role and support the information they have gained in class and lab and will be using in their field.

Great job, everyone!
