MCC Claims NYSMATYC Student Math League Title

MCC has reclaimed the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) Student Math League Title which it last held in the 2003 – 2004 academic year.  The NYSMATYC Student Math League Contest consists of two exams—one given in the fall and one in the spring.  For each exam, MCC’s team score is the sum of our top five eligible students’ scores.  After the fall exam, MCC trailed Hudson Valley CC by just 1 point (199 to 200).  With a very strong spring team, MCC scored 230 points (HVCC second with 220) and claimed the title.  There were 21 community colleges participating in all.

The students contributing to MCC’s team score this academic year were (in alphabetical order):

          David Cooper
          Geoffrey Henderson
          Bozhong Kang
          Albert Sze
          Sonya Travers
          Thanh Van Tran
          Joseph Wegman
          Li Zhang

Bozhong Kang was MCC’s high combined scorer on the exams and finished 4th overall in the state for individual rankings.  Bozhong will be recognized and awarded at the MCC Math Department Award Ceremony in May for this accomplishment.
