Introducing The Democracy Commitment

The Democracy Commitment (TDC) is a national initiative aimed at increasing the capacity of community colleges to engage students in civic learning and democratic practice. Through our involvement in TDC, Monroe Community College will work to prepare students to be informed, active and mobilized citizens in their communities, states, and nation.

On November 4, 2011 College Presidents and Chancellors from across the nation gathered in New York City to demonstrate their support of and commitment to this important national project. As a signatory member of The Democracy Commitment, MCC is committed to democracy and civic education.

The MCC TDC committee will be seeking your active engagement beginning this semester! We are in the process of finalizing a “civic inventory” to identify all of the places and programs on our campuses where civic learning and democratic engagement activities are already underway. This inventory will allow us to celebrate the civic engagement that is already occurring and to identify new opportunities which can be developed.  Please help us to complete the inventory by identifying how MCC is already fulfilling The Democracy Commitment; please email "mailto:eradigan@monroecc.edu" by Friday February 17 with information about civic learning activities at MCC so that we are sure to include all worthy programs!

Also SAVE THE DATES!

On March 6 at DCC and March 9 at Brighton, join us to celebrate “Democracy Days” by sharing your voice about what democracy and civic engagement means to you! Students, faculty and staff will be invited to share their perspective, on video and in writing, about what it means to be an engaged citizen.

How would you answer the question “What does democracy look like?”

Lastly, watch for future announcements about a college wide event in the first week of May when all of MCC can demonstrate a commitment to democratic citizenship!

“An enlightened citizenry is indispensable for the proper functioning of a republic. Self-government is not possible unless the citizens are educated sufficiently to enable them to exercise oversight.”  - Thomas Jefferson
