Congratulations to the 2014 English and Philosophy Department’s Student Writing Award Winners


The Student Awards Committee is pleased to congratulate the following students on their excellent writing:

Callan Award for Best Research Essay

Edward Byrne won 1st place for his essay “Exculpation and Conviction: Narrative and Metonym in the Language of Criminal Justice.”

Patrick Delehanty won 2nd place for his essay “Negation of the Absurd: Is There a Way to Stop Waiting for Godot?”


Rice Award for Best Essay

Jillian Chafik won 1st place for her essay “Parallel.”

Mona Lisa Farida Oates won 2nd place for her essay “I Remember.”


Cooney Award for Best Literary Essay

Edward Byrne won 1st place for his literary essay “Homer and Virgil: Reflective Similes.”

Jeffery Curtin won 2nd place for his literary essay “Racism in the Plays of Fugard and Baraka.”


Cloos Susskind Award for Best Poem

Samantha Swan won 1st place for her poem “City of Sinai.”

Jillian Chafik won 2nd place for her poem “Death Bed.”


Langlois Award for Best Short Fiction

Maria Kane won 1st place for her story “Morning Delivery.”

Zara Hart won 2nd place for her story “Picking Skin.”


Shaw Award for Best Essay

Katlyn Kadlec won 1st place for her essay “My Personal Angel.”


The Sixth Act recognizes the following students for their winning one-act plays:

Jason Whelehan won for his one-act play “Meandering.”

Amelia Schneider won for her one-act play “Dads.”

Caitlin Walker won for her one-act play “The Intoxicated.”
