Avalone to Serve on City’s Advisory Committee for Rochester’s Climate Action Plan

Valarie Avalone, director of institutional planning and chair of MCC’s Sustainability Steering Committee, has been invited to contribute to Rochester’s first Climate Action Plan (CAP) as a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Committee. She was selected for her knowledge and experience with sustainability initiatives in the Rochester region. The CAP will focus on energy efficiency, green buildings, renewable energy, transportation, solid waste management, and land use.

Avalone also serves on the seven-member High Falls EcoDistrict Critical Team. The Critical Team is engaged in a two-year planning study supported by a NYSERDA grant to identify projects that will advance the EcoDistrict framework, targeting projects in transportation, energy, recycling, bio-diversity, and water that can benefit residents, develop new green spaces, and reduce the area’s overall greenhouse gas footprint. The district will encompass neighborhoods adjacent to the Genesee River Gorge at High Falls, as well as the new MCC downtown campus as a significant stakeholder.

In addition, Avalone represents MCC on the Rochester Sustainability Collaborative, a group whose objective is to create a common sustainability agenda through a systematic platform bringing forward-thinking community members, organizations, and academia together as a catalyst for meaningful change through education and action.
