Cerri Banks, Ph.D. ’97 to Deliver MCC 2013 Commencement Address


Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of the College for Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, Mass.) and MCC alumna Cerri A. Banks, Ph.D. '97 will deliver MCC’s 50th annual commencement address at the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial  on Saturday, June 1 at 10 a.m. The achievements of 2,700 MCC graduates will be celebrated at the event.

Banks has served in her role as vice president and dean for Mount Holyoke College since July 2011. She specializes in the sociology of education, cultural studies, multicultural education and qualitative research. Prior to Mount Holyoke, Banks taught as an adjunct professor and graduate instructor at Syracuse University and then served as an assistant professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She became dean of William Smith College in 2008.

After taking teacher education courses at MCC’s Damon City Campus for two years, Banks transferred to Syracuse University where she earned a bachelor of science degree in inclusive elementary and special education, master of science and doctorate degrees in cultural foundations of education, and a certificate of advanced studies in women’s studies.

She has authored two books, "Black Woman Undergraduates, Cultural Capital and College Success" and "Teaching, Learning and Intersecting Identities in Higher Education."

A member of the MCC class of 1997, Banks was inducted into the MCC Alumni Hall of Fame in 2012.
