MCC Foundation Supporters Help Deliver Learning, Technology, and Financial Support to Students

Colleagues,

Please accept my deepest appreciation for all you are doing to ensure our students have what they need to be successful during this crisis. You should also know that your support to the MCC Foundation over the years is impacting our students now more than ever.

Thanks to years of contributions from generous donors, including many College employees, MCC has a resource that few of our peers enjoy. Last week, when events were unfolding more rapidly than we could ever imagine and needs emerged that required immediate attention, the MCC Foundation supported our work every step of the way.

When required clinical rotations for our nursing students were cancelled, the MCC Foundation was able to fund a simulation program to replace in-person clinicals and keep our nurses on track for graduation. Clearly, our community needs these bright, hardworking students, and thanks to you they will be ready for service on time.

Switching to remote instruction was a challenge every education institution in New York faced last week. Not surprisingly, many of our students lacked the technology required to participate in distance learning. We reached out to students to learn what their needs were. More than 500 students responded in one day to a text asking if they required technical assistance to transition to distance modalities. Those respondents were then categorized into two groups: 1) needing technical guidance, and 2) requiring hardware (e.g., laptops).

Luckily, the first group was by far the majority. The second group (~146) is another example of how people are making a difference in this time of crises. The MCC Foundation has allotted $120,000 for us to purchase laptops for students. Two hundred laptops are being prepped for distribution to students this week. All students will sign a memo acknowledging receipt of a laptop and requiring them to return it if they do not register for Fall 2020 coursework.

Finally, we anticipate an increased demand for Dreamkeepers emergency grants. I am incredibly grateful to have this resource for our students and for all our supporters have done to ensure that students have access to basic necessities like food and housing.

The immediate and generous support of our Foundation is strengthening MCC's response to the COVID-19 crisis. Other institutions are far less fortunate. It is a privilege to work with the inspiring MCC community at this challenging time.
