A Thrilling February Break for Upward Bound

Upward Bound students had a blast with February Break programming. They spent the week discovering more about themselves as learners, discovering what it takes to improve their nutrition, acquiring new artistic skills, and more!

We spent Monday morning learning how to deal with test anxiety. Ann Bauer, from the DCC Learning Center, led a workshop on how to deal with the agonizing fear of failure that can paralyze students before a test. Students learned how to challenge their negative thought patterns, prepare well for exams, and get the right nutrition on a test day so their mind and body can focus better. Following the workshop, we headed to a Rochester Razorsharks game against the Kentucky Mavericks at the Blue Cross Arena. The Razorsharks nearly pulled off a 21 point comeback, but fell just short in the final two minutes of the game.

On Tuesday, Ann Bauer led a learning styles workshop. The students learned the importance of discovering one’s learning style, which will allow them to enjoy studying more and study in ways that help them retain information and improve academic performance.

Then, local pottery artists Adam and Sarah showed us how to shape clay into patterned bowls and plates. The pair demonstrated how to make the pottery, and then students had a few hours to shape and re-shape their clay.

We capped off our week on Wednesday with science, beginning with a workshop from Michelle, a nutritionist from Cornell. Michelle taught our students the harmful effects of sugar intake through drinking soda. We also learned how to make healthy snack alternatives, like guacamole. After lunch we headed to the Rochester Museum and Science Center and took in the vast array of exhibits: a petting zoo, a presentation on Tesla’s electricity discoveries, and a hands-on station where students constructed a brick wall.
