Satellite Seminar Series: "Shattering Stereotypes," Oct. 25

Phi Theta Kappa presents a series of internationally televised Satellite Seminars on the organization’s Honors Study Topic of Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are.  Speakers are noted professors from across the nation.  Anyone interested is invited to the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center Forum (3-130) to watch the presentation and discussion afterwards -- and perhaps gain the chance to ask a question directly via satellite.  Each series begins at 7:15pm and refreshments will be provided.

The Third Satellite Seminar is:
Shattering Stereotypes: How Popular Culture Vilifies the Cultural Other
Speaker: Dr. Jack Shaheen

Tuesday, October 25, 2005
7:15pm
R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center Forum, 3-130
(Program is approximately an hour and a half depending on the speakers and the discussion.)

Stereotypes do not exist in a vacuum.  Dr. Jack Shaheen will illustrate how hurtful caricatures impact minority groups, why such portraits persist and what viable solutions exist.

Dr. Shaheen is professor emeritus of mass communications at Southern Illinois University and author of several award-winning books, including Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People.  His writings include more than 300 essays in publications such as Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post and chapters on media stereotypes in nearly 40 college textbooks.  A former CBS news consultant on Middle East affairs, Dr. Shaheen regularly appears on national programs such as Nightline, Good Morning America, 48 Hours, and The Today Show.
