Scholars' Day Preview

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR AND ATTEND MCC SCHOLARS' DAY 2019

On Tuesday, May 7th, all members of the MCC community are urged to spend some time in building 12 on the Brighton campus exploring the insights and achievements shared by students and faculty in poster, oral presentation, and debate formats. (The debates will be in the Campus Center Atrium. The posters will be on the Campus Center Terrace.)

No matter what your interests and experience, you are guaranteed to find something fascinating and come away inspired. You have the power to add meaning to the endeavors of these hard-working scholars by showing your interest in their work.

One of the upcoming presentations is described below. Watch for additional examples from other disciplines in future announcements.

The Change of Centuries Long Practices: The Evolution of Morality within a Culture

Presenter: Ashley Garcia

Sponsor: Professor Robert Muhlnickel (Philosophy)

In this presentation, I explore how the methods of precommitment and exposure, which appeal to emotions of honor and shame, were used to stop the practices of foot binding in Asian cultures and the poaching of elephants for the ivory of their tusks. I then describe Joshua Greene's theory on the evolution of morality as a means of fostering social cooperation. Greene's theory explains why the methods of precommitment and exposure were effective in regards to the halting of poaching and foot binding. In conclusion, I show that the effectiveness of these methods presents possibilities for bringing about social change in the future.
