The Catalog Sequencing Project

Inspired by the 100 Days to Innovation challenge, deans and department chairs worked together this past spring to create advising sequences for all 93 programs of study offered at MCC.  Although program requirements are listed in the MCC Catalog, most do not have “suggested” sequences or semester plans. This lack of explicitness is challenging for both students and faculty who advise out of their specific discipline.

The implications of this project are far-reaching.  Benefits to the students include; awareness of the number of credit hours required (for full-time study) each semester to complete, fewer prerequisite conflicts, fewer FACE errors, and a better understanding how course withdrawal and failure affect completion.   Benefits to the faculty include; access to information when advising out of their specific discipline, opportunities to build upon foundational coursework, and opportunities to create interdisciplinary learning communities.  Benefits to the college include having better predictive information when building the master schedule and the opportunity for departments with highly specific program requirements to use block scheduling.

When MCC’s 2012-2013 Catalog is published, each program of study will be presented in its new and improved suggested sequence! Additionally, these sequences will be saved in an electronic repository for easy access.  Sincere thanks to Char Downing, Bob Bertram, deans, department chairs, directors, faculty, and staff for their work on this project.
