Localvores Celebrated in September

On Tuesday, Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks proclaimed September 2009 as “Localvore Month” to encourage all local residents to purchase and consume locally grown produce. Localvores are defined as people who are committed to eating foods from their local food shed. “September represents the start of the harvest season in Monroe County, when more than 20 farm markets will proudly bring their annual Localvore harvest to the tables of countless local families,” said Brooks.

In a proclamation issued on September 1, Brooks highlighted how the efforts of Monroe County—in partnership with Monroe County’s Cornell Cooperative Extension and the “Grow Monroe” initiative—have worked to help provide “farm to table” nutrition education and awareness. The programs contribute to the “economic vitality of the community and provide healthy outcomes for the people of Monroe County.”

The Grow Monroe program is administered by MCC’s Agriculture and Life Sciences Institute. Find out more at <"https://www.growmonroe.org">.
