Thank you to everyone who participated in our first pilot semester of Starfish, especially those who provided feedback. This spring, the Starfish pilot is being expanded and several new populations have been added, including students in the following programs: Save for Success, Dreamkeepers at DCC, Pathways to Success, Hillside Career Navigators, and students living in the Residence Halls. These new groups join our TRS, EOP, ESOL, athlete and online students so that now there are over 5,000 students included in Starfish@MCC!
Starfish is an early alert system at MCC designed to support student success and retention. It allows faculty and staff to offer targeted interventions for students who may be experiencing academic, financial, or personal difficulties. Faculty can raise a flag at any time on any student in one of the pilot populations or they can simply fill out the progress surveys.
Progress Surveys are periodically requested of faculty to provide systematic feedback to students on academic progress and to address challenges. The surveys provide faculty the opportunity to make students aware of academic concerns, unsatisfactory grades, general concerns, potential danger of failing as well as award kudos for excellent work. These surveys are critical to all Starfish participants, especially for Athletes and EOP students as they replace the previous surveys used for these students. During the Spring 2016 semester there are three Progress Surveys scheduled:
Progress Survey 1 – February 10 – February 26
Progress Survey 2 – March 16– March 25
Progress Survey 3 – April 18– April 27
Training Sessions have been scheduled to coincide with these survey periods to assist faculty with logging into Starfish, navigating the survey process and to answer questions regarding Starfish. Dates and locations for these training sessions are attached. Faculty are encouraged to attend training with materials, such as notes, grading and attendance information, your own laptop if you prefer or anything else that may assist you in completing the progress survey during these sessions.
The Starfish Team thanks you in advance for your participation.
