Careful to Watch for Katrina Scams

MCC's Homeland Security Management Institute has been made aware of a scam in Virginia related to fraudulent Hurricane Katrina donation efforts.

Web sites are being used to gain money, capture usernames and passwords, and lead users to install spyware or trojan software on their computers. Several of the Web sites in question include: www.katrinahelp.com, www.katrinarelief.com and www.katrinacleanup.com.

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has posted a list of reputable charities at https://www.fema.gov/press/2005/resources_katrina.shtm#donate to help victims. Also, the Red Cross offers information at https://www.redcross.org" or call the local office at 241-4100. If you believe that you have been the victim of a fraudulent charity, disaster scam or other consumer fraud, file a report with the Office of the Attorney General at https://www.oag.state.ny.us/ or call the Crime Victims Hotline at 1-800-771-7755.
