Speak Out Rochester Against Child Abuse and Domestic Violence

Prevent Child Abuse New York is proud to present Speak Out Rochester! on Saturday, July 29 at 10 am in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center. Speak Out Rochester! is a day-long event is dedicated to “speaking out” against all forms of childhood abuse, incest and domestic violence through the use of word, music, and dance.  This free, community-wide event is made possible with the support of Bivona Child Advocacy Center and the Rape Crisis Service of Planned Parenthood.

“Rochester’s first Speak Out seeks to strengthen our community by raising awareness and empowering change,” says Transitional Studies' Maggie Watson, event coordinator and coauthor of Dear Pastor, If You Only Knew!  Adults Recovering from Child Sexual Abuse Speak to Clergy.  Of the reported cases, one out of every three women, and one out of every six men are abused or assaulted before their 18th birthday.  “Statistics this high suggest a societal ill of epidemic proportion.  Speaking out is just one way for survivors, supporters and advocates to make a difference.”

Survivors who have attended speak outs in other states describe this event as “a day to break the cycle of secretiveness, to unravel the misconceptions surrounding abuse, and to celebrate and renew a commitment to growth and healing.”

The first Speak Out, held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1992, brought over 400 people together.  This initial event, covered by CNN, began a nationwide grassroots movement, prompting other advocacy agencies, support groups, and survivors to hold similar events in over 12 states.  The vision:  to break the silence surrounding abuse and provide opportunities for survivors to share the challenges and victories of their healing process.
