Local Holocaust Survivors Speak at 27th Yom HaShoah Commemoration


The Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project invites you to remember Holocaust victims and survivors on Thursday, April 27th in the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center. Our 27th annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration (Holocaust remembrance event) begins at 9:30am with the “quieting” of the Flynn Campus Center and an opening ceremony in the Atrium, followed by survivor testimonies. Classes are welcomed to attend!  RSVP for your entire class to attend a survivor presentation to Sharon Scurlock ( <mailto:sscurlock@monroecc.edu> or x3321). 

This daylong commemoration includes:

9:30 am Opening Ceremony, Atrium

10am-2pm Candle Lighting, Calling of Survivor Names, and I Told You Now You Tell the World, the HGHRP's Photo-Essay Exhibit of Local Survivors, Atrium

10am Holocaust Survivor Testimony: Warren Heilbronner, Forum (3-130)
A child living in Stuttgart, Germany when Kristallnacht occurred, his father was deported to Dachau and his family had to bluff their way to safety and into the US.

11:30am  Holocaust Survivor Testimony: Jacque Trama, Forum (3-130)
Born in a Displaced Persons camp to survivor parents, her mother was the only surviving triplet of a Mengele experiment.

1pm  Holocaust Survivor Testimony: Carl Wetzstein, Forum (3-130)
A hidden child in Holland, he is alive today because a Christian family risked everything to hide him.

Also, from 1 to 1:30 pm, join us for a meditation led by Audra Dion (Global Education & International Services) in the Atrium, adjacent to the mandala sand painting and photo-essay exhibit.
