Hispanic Heritage Conversation-School Experiences of Latino Students: A Community-Based Study of Resources, Challenges and Successes

In 2008, the IBERO American Action League initiated “A Call to Action" to mobilize community members in an effort to address the persistent education underachievement among Latino/a students in Rochester, NY.  A task force aimed at learning about the reasons for persistence or drop-out was formed. Under the leadership of Drs. Judy Marquez Kiyama and Donna Marie Harris, a study was conducted and the findings will be shared.

A mixed-methods case study, this project aimed to better understand the state of Latina/o education in the Rochester City School District. The issue of Latina/o academic underachievement and dropout has been a persistent problem documented nationally and locally. With public schools serving increasing numbers of Latina/o students, it is necessary to understand the factors that promote success as well as the barriers and systems that limit and derail schooling.
