Professor Emeritus John W. Lloyd, Business Administration/Economics

I am saddened to inform you of the passing of Professor Emeritus John W. Lloyd on January 29, 2010 at his home in Ithaca, New York. He was 83 years old. He is survived by his wife, Clara; four children: Priscilla Hurdle, John Lloyd Jr., Peter Lloyd, and Mark Lloyd; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Professor Lloyd earned his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and his master’s degree from the University of Rochester. Following service in the U.S. Air Force and a successful career in business, Professor Lloyd joined MCC’s Business Administration Department as assistant professor in 1970. He was promoted to associate professor in 1975 and professor in 1980. After receiving the Dr. Wesley T. Hanson Award for Teaching Excellence, he retired in 1991 as professor emeritus.

The impact of his 21-year career at MCC is immeasurable. In addition to teaching and inspiring students in the classroom, Professor Lloyd represented the best of MCC within the business community—at local and national levels.

Within the classroom, he taught courses in management theory and practice, principles of retailing and business, and human resource management. Known for his dedication to students and colleagues, he served as an academic counselor, advisor, and tutor. A former student described Professor Lloyd as someone who "gives his students a real understanding of what they can expect in the real world. If you have a difficulty, his door is always open.”

Within the Business Administration/Economics Department, he served as the adjunct coordinator and as a member of the department’s promotion, tenure and chair advisory committees. In 1986 he produced instructional materials for General Motors/Rochester Products Division which led to MCC launching a Supervisory Certificate Program. In 1988 he introduced a new student evaluation procedure, as well as a certificate program in fashion merchandising, interior design and retail business management. He supported MCC’s membership in the League for Innovation in the Community College by serving on the planning committee that led to an annual conference in Toronto during the 1980s.

Within the community, Professor Lloyd was highly respected by local business leaders for his innovative ideas and consultative support. Representatives from Eastman Kodak Company, Hickory Farms, Taylor Instruments, and J.C. Penney sought his wise counsel on many occasions. Some of those relationships led to new courses and certificate programs at the college.

In addition to service to the Rochester City School District and SUNY, Professor Lloyd was a member of the New York State Board for DECA. In 1987 he helped welcome 400 high school students and advisors to campus for DECA Day. He also chaired a task force on secondary/post education which resulted in pilot programs within the Brighton, Greece, and Rush-Henrietta school districts.

His professional memberships included the Association of Marketing Educators, (serving as its president in 1974), American Marketing Association, and American Society for Personnel Administration. His published writings included two books on the development and use of business plans and computer-simulation programs to complement business texts published by Times Mirror. He also co-authored an introduction to business text.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 210 North Cayuga Street, Ithaca, on Friday, February 12 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Professor Lloyd’s memory may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church or to Longview, 1 Bella Vista Drive, Ithaca NY 14850.
